Cllr. John O’Leary the current Mayor of City and County of Waterford paid us a visit today to speak with the children and launch our ‘Wellbeing Walk’. The student council together with Mayor O’Leary’s grandchildren who attend our school formed a guard of honour to welcome him. Mr Stone our 4th class teacher kindly played the bagpipes much to the children’s delight and ‘piped’ him in.

The Mayor congratulated the winners and runners up of the Rounders League(s) and presented medals and plaques. He also congratulated the student council with certificates to honour their work throughout the year. Lastly, he presented our ‘Student of the Year’ plaque.

This award is voted on each year by the students themselves in 6th class.

Mayor O’Leary cut the ribbon outside school as all the children commenced the walk whilst Mr Stone played the bagpipes. We walked up the Minaun, back through the village ending in the park where the children ate lunch and had an enjoyable time playing in the park.

On their return to school they all enjoyed having ice cream in the yard.

Avery enjoyable day out and a first for our school.

Engineer’s Ireland run Engineer’s Week in March each year. Here in Faithlegg NS we encourage our children during STEPS Engineers Week, to experience a hands-on, fun and practical insight into engineering.

This was a great success. All children were engaged and had lots of fun.

2nd class

The children from 2nd Class invited a number of classes to complete a variety of STEM activities. The children set up a carousel of activities and led the stations they were assigned to. There were four stations.

Station 1: Build your name 3D (Using lego)

Station 2 : Build the tallest tower (Using matchsticks and playdough)

Station 3: Chain reaction (Using dominos)

Station 4: Build a marble maze.

3rd class

3rd class designed their own catapults using lollipop sticks and elastic bands.  They bought materials from home to use as a holder for their missiles and had a competition to see which catapult would fire a piece of paper the furthest!

4th class

4th class  had to experiment and see how they could engineer a human table – what obstacles were in their way, what worked and what didnt work.

They also had to work as a team to create a tower of cups but without touching the cups with their hands. They were given an elastic band and pieces of string. The groups had a time limit, they could communicate the 1st time, they couldn’t communicate the 2nd time and the last time they had to place the cups in order of their number.

5th class

5th class had the challenging task of designing and making a roller coaster out of recycled materials. Incredible and very imaginative roller coasters were created.

Seachtain na Gaeilge runs during the first few weeks of March each year. It is an international festival to celebrate Irish language and culture.

Here are some of our moments captured in school.

2nd Class Project Work

In SESE, the children in 2nd Class were learning about Habitats. They were assigned a project where they could choose a habitat and create a shoebox habitat (diorama). All children enjoyed the project with parents getting stuck in also. The children showcased their habitats to the whole school in the hall. They were proud of their efforts and loved the feedback and questions from other classes. Well done 2nd Class.

4th Class Project work

4th class worked in groups to create some of the homes and houses of the past that they learned about in history. The houses vary from castles to crannógs, ringforts to viking longhouses and caves to thatched cottages.

We have successfully completed 6 weeks of Children’s Pilate classes for our first to fourth class students.

6th class students helped organise these weekly 10 minute outdoor sessions for the whole school.

Important Information.

The Department of Education has commenced a review of the legislation that provides for education for children and young persons with special educational needs.

The Education for Persons with Special Educational Needs Act 2004, is often known as the EPSEN act, and provides for the education of children aged under 18 years with special educational needs.

The purpose of the review is to ensure that legislation on education for students with additional needs is:

  • up-to-date
  • fully operational
  • reflective of the lived experiences of students, families and school communities.

The review will help us to understand what aspects of the law are working well, and whether aspects of it should be amended.

As part of the review process, a public consultation is taking place.

Our 6th class students organised a Christmas fun day for the younger classes ……..

Our Spooky Halloween……

Today Friday the 28th of October, we had our annual Halloween Parade.

All the children put in a huge effort and it was one we certainly won’t forget. Just look at our super Halloween decorations at the front of the school together with our fabulous carved pumpkins.

Big thank you to Mr Motivator ‘JIMMY’ our caretaker.

Today we raised a massive €440 and all proceeds will go directly to support GOAL’s work with communities facing crisis and poverty.

Summer Stars is the free national reading programme for children that takes place in all public libraries and online each summer.   Tracey McEneaney from Ardkeen Library paid us a visit to present the children with their Summer Stars medals and their certificates of achievement.

We recently took part in an Erasmus+  project (March 2022) centred around the ‘Way of St.James’ (‘Camino de Santiago’), a pilgrimage also undertaken by James Rice, a Waterford man who served as Mayor eleven times in the 15th Century. He made the journey from Waterford to Compostela in Spain via France. The three schools involved were located along this route.

Our project looked at the history and life of James Rice, the rivers and seas on which he travelled and various other activities to help share ideas and culture between participants and schools.

The schools involved in this project with Faithlegg NS are from North West Spain – Sigüeiro-Oroso, in Galicia and Brest in France. Some of our 5th and 6th class students, 19 in total travelled to Sigüeiro- Oroso and Santiago at the end of March. (See our Erasmus Posts page).
